White oak hardwood flooring is a timeless choice that is perfect for any Utah home. With its light and bright shades, white oak creates a warm and inviting atmosphere by enhancing the natural light in your home. Not only is white oak durable and aesthetically pleasing, but it also has many benefits including easy maintenance and flexibility with staining options.

What Are the Different Types of White Oak Flooring?

When it comes to flooring, white oak is one of the most popular and timeless options available. Known for its low maintenance and durability, white oak flooring can last a lifetime when properly taken care of.

But what are the different types of white oak flooring?

Solid Unfinished White Oak or Solid Factory Finished White Oak

First and foremost, there is solid unfinished white oak flooring. This type of flooring is installed, sanded, and finished on site.

Unfinished white oak is more expensive than factory finished white oak due to the extra labor involved but often will last longer if properly maintained and cared for. Unfinished white oak also gives the homeowner or designer more flexibility in regards to staining and personalizing your hardwood floors.

Factory finished white oak is less expensive than unfinished white oak because there is no need for sanding and staining after it has been laid down. Factory finished hardwood installation can be completed in a shorter time span than unfinished.

Unfinished Engineered White Oak Flooring or Factory Finished Engineered White Oak Flooring

Another type of white oak flooring is engineered hardwood. This consists of several layers that have been bonded together to form a stable core, with a beautiful layer of real wood on top.

Engineered hardwood usually comes pre-finished, so installation is straightforward and there’s no need for sanding or staining after it has been laid down.

Both factory finished and unfinished engineered hardwood are more stable than solid hardwood. Engineered hardwood has a greater resistance to seasonal variance in humidity. This makes engineered hardwood an ideal option for installation on concrete, radiant heat, or below-grade installations. Similar to solid hardwood, engineered hardwood can come unfinished or factory finished depending on the homeowners wishes.

Rift and quartered, or Rift-Cut only White Oak

Another popular choice is rift-sawn or quarter-sawn white oak which offers more grain detail and character than plain-sawn options with straight grains that run parallel to each other along the length of the board. It can be stained in almost any hue desired to match existing décor and color schemes.

Wide Plank White Oak Flooring

Wide plank white oak flooring is one of the most beautiful, versatile, and durable types of wood flooring available. Its timeless beauty and charm make it the perfect choice for any home or business. It is ideal for both traditional and modern décor styles, adding a touch of class to any setting.

White oak’s versatility in terms of color allows it to be stained to match any individual preference or style.

Herringbone White Oak Flooring

Herringbone white oak flooring is a classic, timeless and stylish addition to any home. Its beautiful wooden grain, unique pattern, and durability make it perfect for high-traffic areas like kitchens and hallways. Not only is the herringbone pattern aesthetically pleasing, but its unique layout also helps to create an illusion of space, allowing a room to appear larger than it is.

This type of flooring has become increasingly popular over recent years due to its versatility; suitable for both modern and traditional interiors alike, it can be dressed up with different wall colors or accessories. White oak herringbone flooring adds an air of sophistication to any space without compromising on quality or comfort. Its subtle yet striking design gives added character and warmth that you won’t find with other materials.

Three Benefits of Solid White Oak Hardwood Floors

Solid white oak hardwood floors offer an unparalleled level of beauty and strength, making them the ideal choice for any homeowner. From durability to affordability, these floors have a variety of benefits that make them stand out from the competition.

Here are three reasons why solid white oak hardwood floors should be considered when shopping for new flooring.

Durability

First, white oak is incredibly durable and can easily withstand everyday wear and tear as well as in high-traffic areas. This makes it an ideal choice for busy households with children or pets as it will retain its attractiveness over time. Additionally, since it is not prone to scratches or stains, it requires very little maintenance to keep your floor looking great for years to come.

Affordability

Solid white oak hardwood floors are an attractive and durable option for any home. Not only do they offer a variety of color options, but they provide several benefits as well.

Here are just some of the reasons why solid white oak hardwood floors may be right for your home:

Ease of Maintenance

Furthermore, thanks to its natural resiliency, solid white oak hardwood floors can be sanded down and refinished multiple times throughout their lifespan without losing any of their original luster or beauty.

Red Oak vs White Oak Flooring Options

Red oak and white oak are two popular flooring options for homeowners, each type offering its unique benefits. Red oak has a classic reddish hue that provides warmth to any room, and its wide grain pattern with pronounced growth rings makes it more affordable than many other wood types. White oak is renowned for its durability making it the ideal choice for areas of the home prone to high traffic.

Both types of woods are versatile in their staining process, they both can be customized to fit any decorating style. However, people seem to be preferring white oak despite costing more per square foot than its red oak counterpart, and that’s for good reasons. As white oak planks come in a variety of grades with textures ranging from smooth and glossy to rustic and distressed.

It is commonly used in traditional homes due to its light color but can also be stained darker if desired, unlike, the red that has a natural pink undertone. Plus, stain color for white oak offers the client a wide range as the wood is a naturally light color and takes to stain very well.

There is also a wide range of finishes that can be used on white oak to achieve different looks from raw or natural to ultra-matte to gloss. Furthermore, finishing the red oak with lighter stains does not hide this pink tone. However, there are always some wood treatments that can be applied to the red oak to mitigate the pink undertone.

The Cost of White Oak Flooring

White oak flooring is one of the most popular wood flooring materials on the market today. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but it also provides strength and durability that far exceeds other types of wood. That said, like any type of home improvement project, white oak flooring can be quite expensive. Homeowners shopping for this type of flooring should be aware of the various costs associated with white oak before making a purchase decision.

First and foremost is the cost of purchasing the white oak itself. Depending on where you shop and the type of grade you choose, you can expect to pay anywhere from $5-$12 per square foot for quality white oak flooring planks. Installation, sanding, and finishing fees will also add to your final cost.

However, keep in mind that several factors can impact the installation and sanding fees including the size of your space, the type of oak you choose, and the state of your existing floor and subfloor. Additionally, the size and square footage of the project will affect the final price.

However, the damage caused does not have to be permanent. Real hardwood floors can be refinished. This is done by carefully sanding a paper-thin layer off the top and then sealing it with three coats of clear polyurethane finish.

Hardwood refinishing returns the floor back to a like-new state. It will also allow for a contemporary finish that better fits your home’s décor and lifestyle.

Hardwood flooring has long been the preferred flooring choice among home buyers. so taking care of this asset naturally improves the look, function and value of your home.

Hardwood flooring is a smart investment not only because real wood looks beautiful and feels luxurious, but they are also easier to clean and maintain. Hardwood floors are known to last for decades and decades in both residential and commercial locales.

Refinished hardwood floors add more elegance and natural charm to any room in the home. But this is only true when they make sense from a functional and fashionable point of view. Their natural beauty creates a visually warmer and welcoming feeling within your home.

Whether you have a traditional or contemporary design in your home, wood flooring offers style and versatility. This allows you to decorate and redecorate without having to perform very expensive renovations.

Refinishing your solid wood flooring improves your Utah home much more than laminate. And, of course, just by refinishing, your hardwood floors will last a lot longer than laminate floors. Wood floor refinishing will make your home look more attractive, cleaner and more spacious.

Refinishing your hardwood helps keep it more durable. If your hardwood is old, then your home will also look old. Refinishing allows us to give a new look, but also add a new, stronger finish using the latest technologies and product lines. In this way, we can help prevent hardwood floors from getting scratches, dents and other damage.

If the hardwood flooring in your Salt Lake City UT home is badly scratched up, you should have it refinished professionally. Find a company that has years of experience and provides superior service. This winning combination will make your hardwood flooring look good as new and show your home at its best.

Do you have to sand your floor to refinish it?

Refinishing your floor involves sanding away the paper-thin layer off the top and then adding a coating material on your floor. Therefore, sanding must be done. All wood flooring projects require different levels of sanding. Ideally, using a dust free sanding and refinishing professional is best.

It is recommended to consult a professional regarding your wood flooring project to identify the necessary tools to complete your project. A professional will determine the best sanding option for your flooring project and they will sand with the grain.

Refinishing your floor means that you’ll sand multiple times. This is something that cannot be done by the use of just one grit of sandpaper and sanding over your floors one time.  This means it will take at least four passes, each with a progressively finer level of sandpaper to fully refinish most old floors. To accomplish this, you need the right tools and the knowledge and experience of how to use them.

A hardwood flooring refinishing professional will determine the perfect grit starting pass for your floor. This decision is nearly impossible to determine without the experience of a professional. Remember that every floor is different and the condition of your floor will determine how it will be sanded. You can see that there is a fine art and craftsmanship when it comes to sanding your floor.

Why refinish your existing hardwood floor?

Hardwood floors are an elegant and timeless addition to any home, but all floors are subject to wear and tear over time. Hardwood refinishing can be daunting to try and tackle on your own if you’re in Salt Lake City, Utah area.

Woody’s Hardwood Flooring can do a great job. We can handle your wood floor refinishing project with expertise and ease. Professional hardwood refinishing can restore the initial shine of your floor.

There are several reasons to consider refinishing your hardwood floors:

  • Aesthetics: A hardwood refinishing can restore the elegant and classic design to its original shine and beauty. When wood flooring gets old, many patterns become discontinued, but refinishing restores the patterns and thus can raise the value of your home.
  • Price: Your hardwood floors may be aged and damaged, but refinishing is less expensive than replacing your entire floor. This task is best left to professionals who have the skills and the tools to get the job done efficiently and within budget. Calling in your local flooring experts is always your best bet for the integrity of your floors and your own piece of mind.
  • Longevity: Hardwood floors are durable, but with years of usage, they can wear and tear. Refinishing can dramatically extend the life of your floor. Additionally, this can save you the costs associated with replacement and will keep your floors looking great for long.
  • Value of Your Home: Refinishing your wood flooring will increase the value of your home. When you plan to sell your house, refinished floors are very attractive to potential buyers. This allows you to set a higher price for your home.
  • Failing the Water Test: It is important to check your hardwood floors every once in a while, to make sure they’re sealed well. You can perform a test by pouring a tablespoon of water on your floor, especially in an area that looks worn. If the water pulls into droplets without seeping into the wood, the floors are still sealed well. If the water seeps into the wood, you should get your floors refinished. The faster the water soaks in, the more urgently you need to have the refinishing done.
  • Extensive Staining: If you have kids, stains become part of life. It is less likely that you will prevent the stains entirely, so having a realistic maintenance plan is best. At some point stains on your hardwood floors can be too much to deal with. And if you’re considering selling your house, you have to try to get rid of the stains as much as possible. Your best bet to getting rid of all the stains is to refinish your floors.
  • Change of Style: Sometimes refinishing can be done if you just want a change of style. You don’t have to replace your hardwood floors to change the color of your flooring. If your floors are in good shape, you only need to change the color by refinishing your existing floors. This will save you money as well as improve the resale value if you can retain the original flooring.

How long does it take to refinish hardwood floors?

This is one of the most common questions homeowners ask. This is a great question as this of course affects the cost and amount of time that the project will affect your living and/or workspace.

The length of time it takes to refinish hardwood flooring depends on the coat of finish. Specifically, what type of polyurethane you use. There is oil-based polyurethane and water-based polyurethane.

In general, it usually takes 3-5 days to refinish hardwood floors with an oil-based polyurethane. If you’re using water-based polyurethane, it takes about 2 days to refinish hardwood floors. The latter floor finish dries faster and is often the preferred choice if you’re in a hurry, and sometimes it can solve your time challenges.

Should I refinish my hardwood floor or replace it?

Many homeowners with hardwood floors tend to ask is they should refinish their hardwood floor or replace it with a new one. Well, this depends on several factors including the condition or age of your hardwood, the price tag of your current hardwood and your budget.

In general, however, it is almost always less expensive to refinish your hardwood floors. Replacing your hardwood floors involves a few costs such as paying for additional wood, installation sanding and ripping up and hauling away existing wood. If portions of your wood flooring are damaged, probably through stains, you can refinish them and it will look all new.

In some cases, you will be able to replace a damaged section of floor, such as this one due to water damage, and then sand and refinish all of the flooring for a consistent look and feel.

If your floors are very old and have been refinished many times, it may be time to replace them with new ones. By old we mean that your floors have been there for decades and refinished more than five times.

Also, if you want to change the species of your wood, you may consider replacing your wood flooring. In the majority of homes in the US, you will find wood flooring made of oak because of the look and graining of oak. However, you can achieve a new look and finish simply by refinishing your existing floors.

What are the best/worst wood floors for refinishing?

There are both the best and worst wood floors for refinishing. Describing wood floors as best or worst for refinishing depends on the type and condition of your wood flooring. The truth is not all hardwood floors can be refinished.

The best hardwood floors for refinishing are those that have common problems that can be addressed and fixed without replacing the entire floor.

The worst type of wood floors for refinishing are those that have structural damage that can only be addressed by ripping up the floor and replacing it. Severe flooring damage such as ugly stains, warping, chipping and termite infestation, is worst for refinishing, and a replacement would make more sense.

What can I do to prepare my home for a hardwood floor refinishing project?

Once you have scheduled your hardwood floor refinishing project, you can prepare your home for the hardwood refinishing Utah project:

  1. Remove all furniture and rugs.
  2. Take down picture and wall hangings or items on shelves.

The Increasing Value of Hardwood Flooring in Utah Homes

It is no understatement to say that choosing the best flooring for your home is one of the most important decisions a home owner can make. No matter what size your home is, whether it is a townhouse, bungalow, 2-storey or mansion, the flooring you choose today will not only affect your quality of life for years to come, but also the resale value of your home.

Hardwood Flooring Continues to Gain Popularity

Hardwood flooring in Utah and across the United States continues to gain popularity among new and existing home owners. A recent study shows that the Wood Flooring Manufacturing industry has grown over the past five years with approximately 75% of wood flooring construction in the US was used in residential construction. More and more people are obviously seeing the benefit and value of real wood flooring in their homes.

Hardwood Flooring Adds Resale Value to your Utah Home

In a USA Today article that discusses those specific features for which home buyers are willing to pay extra, over half of the home buyers are willing to pay more for a home with hardwood floors.

Hardwood holds its value, not only for a few decades, but in many cases, hardwood floors have lasted well over 100 years. They are extremely durable and comparatively easy to maintain, so it is no surprise they are becoming an increasingly popular choice not only for residential use, but for commercial venues as well, as you can see in this local flooring project completed by Woody’s Hardwood Flooring for the Salt Lake City restaurant, Copper Canyon Grill House & Tavern:

Hardwood flooring for Copper Canyon Grill House & Tavern 215 S Temple, Salt Lake City, UT 84101, USA

When it comes to the resale value of hardwood floors in your home, according to a survey by the NWFA (National Wood Flooring Association), “99% of the real estate agents participating believe that homes with hardwood floors are easier to sell.”

Furthermore, 82% of those real estate agents believe that homes with hardwood floors sell faster than those without them. A faster selling home reflects less price negotiation, higher market demand and an easier sale overall.

Not to mention, these homes sell for more money than those that don’t have hardwood flooring in place. Wood floors in your Utah home add a distinctive and rich look and feel that other flooring types, such as carpet and linoleum simply fail to create.

What is the Best Type of Hardwood Flooring?

Determining which type of hardwood flooring requires looking at the many options available to the home owner. The top options include which hardwood species, style of board and finish work best in the home’s interior. Considerations of the home’s overall layout and other interior design features all play a role in narrowing down your best choice.

While choosing the best hardwood floor can be a very personal decision, it is important for the home owner to be aware of the factors that will affect their decision for years to come. It is always best to contact a professional hardwood flooring contractor who has extensive experience and knowledge of all of these factors and can help guide you through the decision-making process.

Hardwood Flooring Industry Trends 2018 vs. 2019

Beyond relying on one’s personal taste when choosing the best hardwood flooring, it is beneficial for us to look at some recent studies that support our choice, especially from the point of view of it being an investment in the overall value of your home when it comes time to sell.

So, let’s compare a couple of studies based on the wood flooring industry reviews that reveal trends in types, species and finishes of hardwood flooring in the US.

A 2018 hardwood flooring study shows by an industry review that there was an expected higher demand for most types of hardwood floors, including:

  • Long Board 75% more demand
  • Wide-Plank 71% more demand
  • Engineered 67% more demand
  • Factory-Finished 48% more demand
  • Distressed Flooring 40% more demand

There was also an expected increase in demand for Domestic species of hardwood flooring, while Imported species were expected to decline. Reclaimed flooring was also appearing in higher demand with an expected 48% increase.

The study also noted that, “While product-demand expectations always vary market to market, NWFA members in the survey seemed to agree that demand for white oak will continue to grow in 2018. Wide-plank, long boards and cerused and gray finishes are also en vogue, a trend in line with many consumers’ growing preference for ‘rustic’, ‘authentic’, and ‘organic’ looks, members in the survey said.”

Other popular hardwood species apart from White Oak, include Hickory/Pecan, Cork, Brazilian Cherry and Santos Mahogany.

The 2018 survey shows that certain hardwood flooring colors were predicted to be chosen by homeowners, including:

Gray stains and finishes will be 62% in more demand while Cerused hardwood will be 56% in more demand.

Dark hardwood flooring color demand will largely remain the same, showing that they are still a popular choice. Similarly, light flooring finishes will generally have the same demand at 55% but will still see a 33% increase in demand.

In the follow up study in 2019, White Oak continues to be the top choice, due in part to it being widely available from manufacturers around the world.

Also, 2019 will continue to see more demand for Wide Plank, Long boards and Engineered hardwood flooring. As home owners are of course concerned about the resale value of their new or existing home, choosing a flooring that remains a popular species and finish can help sell the home and maintain its value long-term.

The 2019 study also noted:

  • A 16% decrease in demand for Gray stains and finishes
  • A significant drop in demand of Cerused flooring with only a 19% increase.
  • Dark and Light colors would see approximately the same demand at 44% and 49% respectively.

How to Choose the Right Hardwood Flooring

So, what does this mean to the Utah home owner when they are looking to have new hardwood flooring installed or existing floors refinished?

While hardwood types, species, colors and finishes have some fluctuation in popularity due to interior design trends, there are certain choices, such as White Oak, Hickory/Pecan, and Walnut species, along with wide plank and long board styles of boards will potentially remain popular for years to come.

Here is an example of a a wide plank White Oak custom floor installation by Woody’s Hardwood Flooring in Utah:

Quality hardwood flooring is a worthwhile investment and that includes the species and finish, but also how it is installed or refinished. However, making the decision on what is best for your home can feel overwhelming considering the vast array of choices in wood species, styles of board and quality and type of wood finishes. Not to mention, which rooms these floors will be installed in. For example, such areas as kitchens and basements have unique requirements that need to be considered.

Besides real hardwood flooring, there are now many other “look-alike” floor solutions that look like wood but do not offer all of the benefits a real wood floor delivers. It is becoming increasingly important for home owners and buyers to be educated on the different types of flooring before they invest. The onus of this education falls not only on the hardwood flooring installation company, but also the flooring and finishing manufacturers.
